Dartmouth and the surrounding South Devon countryside and coastline draw thousands of visitors every year for their beauty alone. But there are other benefits of our natural environment, including a varied food economy which ranges from award-winning seafood restaurants to producers of delicious local ice-cream.

The South Devon Cookbook, compiled by the Salcombe and Dartmouth-based team at Coast & Country Cottages, pays tribute to the businesses, chefs, farmers and fishermen that make South Devon the foodie paradise it is.

Published as a freely downloadable ebook, its centrepiece is a collection of 21 mouthwatering recipes that make the most of the region’s wonderful produce. Contributors include celebrity chef Mitch Tonks, patron of the Dartmouth Food Festival and one of the restaurateurs behind the town’s popular Seahorse and Rockfish restaurants.

Other recipes have been provided by nationally renowned local producers like Riverford and the Well Hung Meat Company. Tideford Organics, Dick and Wills, the South Devon Chilli Farm and Jane Baxter from Wild Artichokes.

From Mitch Tonks’ mouthwatering monkfish recipe to the South Devon Chilli Farm’s spicy salsa for your breakfast eggs, you’ll find eating locally doesn’t mean compromising on flavour.

There’s something about South Devon…

In his foreword, Mitch Tonks writes: ‘Food is part of life in South Devon and our restaurants, shops and markets have their doors open to give visitors that special warm Devon welcome.’

To discover more about our foodie way of life, Coast & Country Cottages’ team spoke to some of the key individuals behind South Devon’s leading food brands, such as Duncan Schwabb, Head Winemaker at Sharpham Vineyard, and Lynette Sinclair, Managing Director of Tideford Organics.

The final section of the cookbook is food and drink directory, covering cafés and restaurants, pubs, delis, takeaways and leading producers. Karen Jones, Director of Coast & Country Cottages, said:

‘The South Devon Cookbook is our chance to pay homage to the award-winning products and producers that play their parts in making South Devon such a delightful place to be, whether a local resident or visiting for a holiday.’
