ABOUT

The charming village of Stoke Fleming lies on the coastline of Start Bay just three miles and a short drive from beautiful Dartmouth. Its clifftop position, lying within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), offers breathtaking panoramic views over one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the United Kingdom.

History

The first records of Stoke Fleming are found in the Domesday Book of 1086 under its Saxon name, Stoc. The church in Stoke Fleming, St Peter’s Church is a Grade II listed building which dates back to the 13th century and was restored in 1871.

Nearby Slapton Sands was used as a rehearsal spot for the D-Day landings in the Second World War and is known for the tragic Exercise Tiger where many lost their lives. There is a Sherman Tank memorial at Torcross to commemorate those who died during the operation.

Within walking distance of the village is the award-winning beach at Blackpool Sands as well as other popular beaches for visitors to enjoy. Other popular coastal communities such as Salcombe and Beesands are easily reached by car.

Stoke Fleming is home to a pub, restaurant called Radius 7, café-restaurant and shop at Blackpool Sands, post office, church and primary school. All the facilities of the bustling resort of Dartmouth such as shops, cafés and restaurants, river trips, boat hire and other attractions are just 10 minutes away.

The South West Coast Path runs through the village meaning there are plenty of stunning walks to be enjoyed along this magnificent stretch of coastline and you’ll find lots of lovely countryside walks within the area too.
