Dartmouth Shakespeare Week
Never ones to rest on our laurels, we are revisiting our second ever production in 2014...only this time, with a difference.
This year we hope to be affiliated, once again, to the Royal Shakespeare Company and their Open Stages initiative 2014-16 and it is with this in mind (and because we love setting ourselves a challenge or three!) that our Artistic Director - and 2014's production director - Jane Windosr-Smith, has elected to present this audience favourite in the style of the Italian Commedia dell'arte.
All the characters from dell'arte will be there, represented by Shakespeare's own well-loved characters: Arlechinno, Columbina, The Innamorati (Lovers) and Pantalone to name but a few.
The comedy and downright slapstick (a word derived from dell'arte performances) of Shrew lends itself magnificently to this form and we intend to mix the wehole thing up and present what amounts to a Shakespearean pantomime in August!
This is an entirely new and incredibly exciting direction for the company to take, and one not without its own challenges. But we are already looking forward to starting work on this production - editing and planning are, even now, in progress - with specialist workshops in the dell'arte form and a completely new way of rehearsing...for us, at least.
So make a note in your diaries and be sure to join us for what promises to be an unique and thoroughly entertaining production of one of Shakespeare's best-loved and most comedic plays: Taming of the Shrew. Tickets for the performance will be available from Dartmouth Tourist Information Centre 01803 834224
