Step back in time and explore the incredible world of Sir Francis Drake, privateers and pirates in Tudor England aboard Brixham's iconic full sized replica of Drake's famous ship. An unforgettable day out whatever the weather! Adults £4 and Children just £3.

The Golden Hind, moored for all to see in the middle of Brixham Harbour, is a full sized replica of one of the most famous and iconic vessels of the great age of sail.
For three years Devon hero Sir Francis Drake and his crew of around seventy five brave adventurers sailed around the world, becoming the first Englishmen in history to circumnavigate the globe bringing back fabulous riches looted from the Spanish Empire. Against all odds the majority of Drakes crew lived to tell the tale and enjoy the profits of their labours, sealing Drake’s reputation as a great seaman as well as a great warrior.

The Golden Hind is also representative of the scores of small ships that set out from harbours all along the coast to defend England against the mighty Spanish Armada in 1588.
During the Armada campaign Drake was given command of a squadron of Devon ships, crewed by Devon seamen, with which he captured the Rosario, one of the wealthiest ships of the Armada carrying the pay for the Spanish fleet. The Rosario was carried into Torbay, where the treasure was removed and the crew imprisoned in Torre Abbey. Brixham fishermen were employed to tow the Rosario to Dartmouth, where she was thought to be more secure.

Drake died at sea in 1597, leaving behind a reputation as one of England and Devon’s most heroic sons.

There's so much to see and explore above and below its five decks, with many hands on exhibits giving the visitor of all ages a wonderful insight to the incredible life at sea in Tudor times.
The Golden Hind at Brixham is a full sized replica of one of the most iconic ships from the age of exploration being a feature of this picturesque harbour since 1964 and has a long history of screen appearances in Film, Television drama, Documentary and even childrens programs.
Sir Francis Drake : Soldier, Seaman, Politician and Engineer is best remembered as an explorer. In his most famous ship, The Golden Hind, he became the first Englishman to circumnavigate the globe in an epic expedition of plunder and discovery (1577-1580).
The hardship endured in overcrowded and primitive quarters is unbelievable. Only 56 men survived with Drake, returning 3 years later with a vast cargo of treasure ( the Queens share alone was more than the countries national debt). 'El Draco' became one of the most famous men in Western Europe and was feared and reviled by the Spanish. Drake was duly knighted onboard. Come aboard and explore the ship that was home to Drake and his crew of 70 for almost 3 years. Experience the sights, sounds and smells of life aboard a Tudor ship. Feel the romance of the seas in the great age of sail.
