History

Beginning as a Celtic settlement, Paignton was a fishing village right up until the 19th Century when the harbour was built. In 1859, the arrival of the railway brought crowds of visitors and this coastal community quickly became a favourite tourist destination for the Victorians. Nowadays, Paignton is a landmark of the English Riviera and remains one of the most popular holiday resorts in the UK.

You won’t be short of things to do in the town, whether you want to try your hand at a new watersport or relax on the shore. Paignton’s beaches are diverse and the sand here is claimed to be the best in the UK for building sandcastles, and there are plenty of competitions here to prove it. As well as the coastline, visitors can enjoy varied attractions including an incredible zoo, a thrilling outdoor waterpark and a jam-packed pier full to the brim of family favourites.
