The Dart Music Festival is the biggest free music festival in South Devon – this 3 day musical extravaganza is celebrating its 20th year in 2017, and promises to be bigger and better than ever!
We’ve been speaking to Val Depledge who is on the Dart Festival Committee to get the inside knowledge on this amazing festival.
What is Dart Music Festival and when is it on?
The Festival takes place annually in May – this year 12th – 14th – with an eclectic mix of music of all genres in various indoor and outdoor venues all over town. All performances are free to the public, but the Festival does cost us £60,000+ to put on for which we strive to raise funds all year round.
Around 100 artists perform over the 3 days in around 20 venues across the town. Every genre of music is catered for, Acoustic, Jazz, Blues, Rock, Pop, Folk, Classical, Reggae, and even traditional Sea Shanties.
Why do you love Dart Music Festival?
The music! Three days of non-stop enjoyment and the happy atmosphere of other like-minded folk – families, young and old alike - strolling around and enjoying all types of music wherever they go.
Where is the Music Festival Held? What venues will events be held in?
All over town - in the churches, Royal Avenue Gardens at the Bandstand, the Guildhall, the Flavel, the Market Square, Bayards Cove and participating pubs and restaurants.
As most venues are only a short walk away from one another, you can wander between acts to find one that suits your musical tastes.
What would you say are the five top things to see and do at the Dart Music Festival?
Impossible to choose one act from all the performances on offer, so I would say make sure you get hold of a programme, lanyard or check out the website so you can plan every minute of your days and not miss out on a single thing. The outdoor performances on a sunny day can be particularly brilliant – the Bandstand, Bayards Cove, Market Square – but then so can the atmosphere in the Guildhall, churches, Flavel and pubs – the choice is yours!
What else can people enjoy when visiting the Dart Music Festival?
The stunning location, the friendly atmosphere, the local pubs, restaurants, cafes and shops – and three days packed with unforgettable music and fun - what’s not to like..??
How do we get to the Music Festival?
The best place to park during Dartmouth Music Festival is at the Park and Ride Car Park at the top of town. Parking is £5 per car per day, which of course includes use of the bus for the car driver and all the passengers (provided they ride together). Full South Hams Car Park permits are valid for this service.
History of the Dartmouth Music Festival
The Dart Music Festival was started in May 1998 by Rob and Di Lyon, Nigel Way and Roger Kempton. Music lovers Rob and Di put on music regularly in the Seale Arms, which they were running at the time, and were inspired by a visit to KInsale Jazz Festival to start a similar event in Dartmouth. From this small beginning the Festival has grown but has never lost its ethos of ‘Music For All’.
