ABOUT

Located within the sheltered Torbay, also known as the English Riviera, you don’t get much more of a traditional British seaside resort than Torquay. A combination of beaches, family attractions and great nightlife, this vibrant coastal town is perfect for day visit or longer stay.

History

Up until the mid 19th century, the town of Torquay was a relatively minor settlement but then the railway linked it to the rest of the UK. These improved transport connections meant Torquay expanded rapidly to cater for the area’s popularity with the Victorian’s and after the First World War, the Great Western Railway Company extensively promoted Torquay, helping the town to become a major UK holiday resort.

You can explore Torquay’s history at one of the many historical attractions including an abbey established in 1196. Or step back in time to the prehistoric era and visit the famous caves in the resort.

Things to Do

You’ll never be short of things to do in Torquay. You can enjoy a visit to the cinema or theatre, head to a museum or if you want to make the most of the outdoors, enjoy a walk around the harbour or take to the water on a boat trip. It’s a great place to have a go at some watersports too.

The town centre is a great place for a spot of retail therapy. With big name brands and smaller shops lining the main streets, there’s something for everyone.

Throughout the year, Torquay has a whole host of events taking place. From impressive air displays to unique cultural events, the town knows how to cater for everyone’s tastes and ages, and it certainly knows how to party too!

Torquay has a wide range of bars and restaurants. With larger chain restaurants alongside independent cafés and eateries there’s no shortage of places to eat out. The town is known for its vibrant evening entertainment with clubs and beautifully set bars next to the waterfront.
