Get Active in Dartmouth

Dartmouth is a pretty harbour town sitting on the banks of the spectacular River Dart. It’s this wonderful location that makes the area great for an active break or active day trip during your holiday.

Walking

Throughout Dartmouth there are several self guided and guided walking tours which will let you explore the town’s streets, waterfront and history.

If you want to explore the town at your own speed the newly launched Dartmouth Mayflower Heritage Trail will allow you to do just that. Launched as part of Dartmouth’s Mayflower 400 commemorations the trail is split into three parts, which can be walked separately or as a complete route. Maps are available or you can download the Mayflower Self-Guided Tours app. You’ll also find specially designed way markers and interpretation panels along the route.

If you would prefer a guided tour of our historic town, Dartmouth Guided History Tours offer a 1 to 1 ½ hour walking tour of Dartmouth pointing out the most important buildings and places all within a sensible walking distance.

Walking in Dartmouth doesn’t just have to involve the town, the South West Coast Path runs right past Dartmouth and exploring this will allow you to discover the coastline, with its dramatic cliffs and dazzling sea views either side of the estuary mouth.

Watersports

The town’s coastal location makes it perfect to try some watersports and there are some superb watersports providers operating out of Dartmouth.

Sea Kayak Devon’s highly qualified guides can take you on an unforgettable journey where you get to explore spectacular rocky islands and secret coves, get up close to amazing wildlife and discover incredible sea caves from your kayak.

If you would rather explore the estuary mouth on a paddle board, The Paddle Shack offers paddle board lessons, trips and tours on the river.

Cycling

If you’re bringing your bike to Dartmouth you’ll find some great cycling routes close to the town. Cycling is a great way to travel further afield without the need to take your car or use public transport.

Being on your own two wheels also lets you have the freedom to change your route if you see somewhere on route which takes your fancy or if you find you want to stop and admire the view.
