ABOUT

To the north of Dartmouth centre overlooking the river and Embankment is Coronation Park. The open playing fields are the ideal place for a picnic or to enjoy some park games.

On the southern edge of the park is an enclosed children’s play park and sand pit complete with climbing frames, swings, slides and picnic benches. Next to the play park you’ll find a café serving snacks, drinks and hot meals.

Within the park there are a number of tennis courts, including two which are floodlit, which are available to rent. To the north of Coronation park further up river is the Dartmouth Higher Ferry, which is one of the many river ferries operating in Dartmouth which either run across the river to Kingswear or upstream to Totnes and the surrounding villages.

Coronation Park was opened in 1937 and like much of the level land in Dartmouth is built on reclaimed land. Over the years the towns growth has meant it run out of land and large sections were reclaimed from the river banks and mudflats. Towards the end of the 19th century the old wharves along the river banks became unsuitable for larger ships of the times, this lead to a completely new waterfront being constructed and the South and North Embankments were opened in 1885. The waterfront was extended in the 1930’s to the higher ferry, with the reclaimed land in between becoming Coronation Park.
