The Royal Castle Hotel is a world-renowned 16thC traditional English coaching inn situated on the quayside in the heart of the historic riverside port of Dartmouth right opposite the Royal Avenue Gardens and River Dart.
Dating back 400 years the hotel has many historical links with the developments of the port of Dartmouth and the Britannia Royal Naval College. Past royal visitors have included Prince Charles and Prince Andrew, famous sailors Sir Francis Chichester and Chay Blyth, and famous film stars Cary Grant and Donald Sutherland. More recently the hotel has been used as a film set for the Agatha Christie thriller –‘Ordeal by Innocence’ and most recently featured in the BBC Down to Earth TV series.
The Royal Castle Hotel is privately owned and has 24 award winning non-smoking 3* individual en suite bedrooms offering optional spa baths, four-poster beds, air-conditioning and river views. Many rooms are home to a charming collection of fine antiques and interesting features. All bedrooms have complimentary wi-fi, colour satellite TV, radio, direct dial telephone, hair dryer and complimentary tea and coffee making facilities. There is no lift.
The hotel restaurant, The Grill Room, is situated on the first floor and has fine harbour and river views. Seasonal menus offer an excellent range of quality local food and drink with many local specialities including smoked fish, local crab, scallops and traditional Carvery roasts served every Sunday.
On the ground floor of the hotel there are of 2 popular bars. One, The Galleon, is decorated as a traditional English Pub and has lots of atmosphere and is a great place to meet the locals! The Harbour Bar situated opposite is designed in a much more contemporary style.
Both bars are well stocked with local beers, ales, wines and liqueurs, in addition to world-renowned brands. Through the cooler months log fires burn and spit roasts are a special weekly feature. The restaurant and bars are open for breakfast, morning coffee, lunch, afternoon traditional Devon cream teas and supper.
Many special breaks and events are held at The Royal Castle Hotel throughout the year including Murder Mystery Theatre Dinners and weekend breaks to celebrate the Dart Music Festival and the Royal Regatta. Full details are available on the Royal Castle web site.
The hotel staff are renowned for their very friendly service and several different international languages are spoken including Spanish and French. For guests staying at the hotels with their dogs, your pets receive treats, a special dog-bed and plenty of advice on places to walk locally.
